C of E covered up attacks by serial abuser John Smyth, review finds

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 7 November 2024

Report says it is ‘unlikely’ Justin Welby knew nothing of concerns about Smyth, who abused schoolboys at Christian holiday camps

The Church of England covered up the actions of its worst and most brutal serial abuser, who subjected his victims to traumatic physical, sexual, psychological and spiritual attacks, an independent review has concluded.

John Smyth QC, a powerful and charismatic barrister, sadistically abused private schoolboys who attended evangelical Christian holiday camps in the late 1970s and early 80s. When the abuse was discovered, Smyth was allowed to move abroad in the full knowledge of church officials, where he continued to act with impunity.

Here’s how the American press can survive four years of Trump | Margaret Sullivan

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 7 November 2024

The media will be under siege, but former Washington Post editor Marty Baron has some ideas for what journalists can do

Everything we know about the next US president suggests that the press in America will be under siege in the next four years as never before.

After all, Donald Trump has portrayed the media as the “enemy of the people”, has suggested that he wouldn’t mind seeing journalists get shot , and, in recent months, has sued CBS News and the Pulitzer prize organization.

Margaret Sullivan is a Guardian US columnist writing on media, politics and culture

Nick Bailey, who went to Sergei Skripal’s home, describes visions of a ‘tsunami of pure heat and fire’ near his eyes

A former police officer who was poisoned in the Salisbury novichok attack has described the “nightmarish hallucinations” he experienced shortly after coming into contact with the nerve agent, including visions of a “tsunami of pure heat and fire” near his eyes.

Nick Bailey was affected after the nerve agent was smeared on the former Russian spy Sergei Skripal’s door handle in Salisbury in March 2018.

Finnish fathers taking nearly double length of paternity leave since 2022 reform

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 7 November 2024

Dads say rule change granting both parents equal time off has helped build bond between children and fathers

Paternity leaves in Finland have nearly doubled in length after a 2022 reform of the parental leave system, the social benefits agency has said.

The change granted both parents equal amounts of leave for the first time: 160 days each of paid leave, to be used before the child turns two. Sixty-three of the days can be transferred to the other parent, if desired.

Rogan, Musk and an emboldened manosphere salute Trump’s win: ‘Let that sink in’

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 7 November 2024

The so-called ‘heterodoxy’ endorsed the Republican’s hyper-masculine promise. Their young male fans listened

Late on Tuesday night, when it became clear that Donald Trump would be re-elected as president of the United States, the so-called “heterodoxy” was elated.

For years, these male podcasters, influencers and public figures had marketed themselves as free-thinking pundits who evaded the bounds of political classification. “Their political views could once have been described as libertarian,” Anna Merlan wrote for the Guardian in August; the word used to describe them pointed to the same, derived from the Greek heteros , meaning other, and doxa , meaning opinion.

Mark Robins gave Coventry hope against all odds: his hasty exit stinks of ingratitude | Jonny Weeks

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 7 November 2024

Decay had set in this season but the manager helped a fanbase fall back in love with the club – he deserved more loyalty

Really? After almost eight years, two promotions, an agonising Championship playoff final defeat on penalties and a toenail offside which cost them a place in last year’s FA Cup final, Mark Robins is no longer Coventry City’s manager.

Only Pep Guardiola has enjoyed longer job security in English football’s top four divisions – and let’s be honest, he has had it easy in comparison. Since Robins returned to the Sky Blues in 2017 for his second spell, he has been a calming presence amid near-constant tumult as the club became homeless and almost went bust at the hands of its former owners. He operated under a vicious financial stranglehold but somehow brought triumph, navigating a return to the Championship from the depths of League Two, overseeing four trips to Wembley and reigniting a fanbase that had fallen out of love with the club.
