Will Jordan try helps New Zealand pull away as Ireland’s home run fizzles out

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 8 November, 2024

    • Autumn Nations Series: Ireland 13-23 New Zealand
    • Ireland beaten at home for first time since Feb 2021

By kick-off here at a packed Lansdowne Road a steady flow of traffic had done a drive-by of the All Blacks social media post from earlier in the day. It featured footage of the final two minutes from the game 11 years ago between these teams, on this pitch, where New Zealand raised themselves from the dead: another harrowing event for the home team and their supporters; another flag planted on New Zealand’s hill of invincibility.

The final two minutes here told a different story: no need to overhaul a deficit; no need to nail touchline conversion; no need to sweat any bullets. With 11 minutes left they were two scores clear against a side trying hard but achieving very little.

Khadija Shaw hat-trick fires Manchester City to emphatic WSL win over Spurs

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 8 November, 2024

How do you stop Khadija Shaw? The correct answer remains a mystery, but many of the wrong answers were unwittingly exposed by Tottenham’s out-of-sorts defending on Friday night during this one-sided affair.

Inside the first minute, the Spurs centre-back Clare Hunt learned the hard way that ideally you should not take too long on the ball when being closed down by the Women’s Super League’s top scorer so far this season, otherwise she will easily nip the ball away from your feet, bear down on your team’s goal and clinically tuck the ball into the net past your goalkeeper, Rebecca Spencer.

England must turn potential into points in pivotal clash with Australia | Robert Kitson

      news.movim.eu / TheGuardian • 8 November, 2024

With hosts stung by agonising losses and Wallabies eager to impress before Lions tour, much is at stake for both sides

Some games shape entire seasons and, for both England and Australia, another one is looming. Nail the Wallabies convincingly and the home side will believe their fortunes are finally reviving. Permit the visitors a morale enhancing first win in south-west London since the 2015 Rugby World Cup, on the other hand, and the horizon will darken swiftly.

England have already lost five of their past seven internationals dating back to Murrayfield in February . Next week the current world champions are due at Twickenham and, after a brief subsequent reunion with Eddie Jones’s Japan, the first two rounds of next year’s Six Nations championship pit Steve Borthwick’s team against, respectively, Ireland and France.
